BoKa Automatisierung GmbH relies on igus® solutions for efficient automation in industry

Lightweight polymer products and high-performance robots are revolutionising production automation and enabling efficient handling of 1x2m polystyrene plates

BoKa Automatisierung GmbH is an emerging company specialising in industrial automation and robotics. Their main goal is to automate existing facilities to enable more efficient production of goods. They rely on the support and product solutions from igus®.

To create a light, yet strong gripper arm that can carry 1x2m polystyrene plates, the decision was taken to use drygear® Apiro®.

BoKa Automatisierung GmbH used a robot from FANUC Europe for the movement mechanism of the large plates. This robot is able to carry the plates in conjunction with a 7th axis, which is guided by a linear guide and energy chain from igus®.

The application illustrates how the combination of lightweight polymer products and high-performance robots leads to a perfect lean production automation process.

Profile

  • What was needed: A light and cost-effective device for adjusting the format of a gripper
  • Requirements: The gripper had to be particularly light due to its size
  • Industry: Low Cost Robotics, processing/packaging industry, mechanical and plant engineering

Problem

BoKa Automatisierung GmbH was faced with the challenge of developing an exceptionally cost-effective solution for the gripper of a robot, as well as the required format adjustment for different load sizes.

A special requirement was to optimise the robot movement through massive lightweight construction. At the same time, the gripper arm needed the necessary power to set the large plates in motion and lift them.

Solution

The igus gearbox Apiro® was the solution to the problem.

At igus®, Apiro® stands for affordable worm gears and flexible, customer-specific solutions. The modular gearbox system offers a wide range of products based on the combination of various designs on the input and output of the gearboxes, different gear ratios and a wide range of accessories.

A modular structure and the simple connection of individual components allow cost-effective solutions for an infinite number of applications. Hence the name: "Apiro" is the Greek word for "infinite".

With Apiro®, special solutions such as the gripper from BoKa Automatisierung GmbH can also be implemented quickly and cost-effectively.

Products used

Easily build an individual automation system

Possible applications can be in the
  • packaging,
  • food,
  • medical industries and many more.
Lane adjustments, pusher tasks, gearboxes with different gear ratios, slewing rings and rotary axes can be used there. The modular gearbox system can be motorised or used for manual adjustments.

Every robot is as good as its gearboxes

In robots, robotic gears are the link between the motor, which supplies the drive energy, and a machine part that carries out a planned movement.

Gearboxes made of high-performance plastic: Lubrication-free, lightweight and shock-resistant
All drygear® joints are modular; they can be extended as required and integrated into existing systems. The drygear® gearboxes are particularly favoured for robot arms for quality control or sorting. But the gearboxes are also used for rotary axes or sliding applications.
