Problem

Galam Robotics is a French start-up company developing a brand new modular robotics based storage technology called "TAK-ONE". TAK-ONE is the first fully modular storage robot! This solution, which resembles a giant Rubik's Cube, is both extremely fast and very compact. In addition, thanks to its unprecedented modularity, this solution adapts to any space, no matter how small. The TAK-ONE solution is particularly important in urban logistics. Galam Robotics therefore offers them to all retailers who want to increase the productivity and compactness of their warehouses or their urban logistics centres tenfold. 

The TAK-ONE solution is designed to ensure storage operations in the customer's premises with close contact with the public. The application environment is a city store or a logistical micro-hub in the city. One of the biggest problems that had to be overcome at the hardware level was the translation of the storage racks into three dimensions using the TAK-ONE modules, and that in extremely tight spaces. A patent has been applied for specifically on this point.

Solution

Galam Robotics worked with igus® to find the ideal vertical displacement solution. The specifications were bold: the solution had to be reliable over time (very high number of cycles), light, very compact, well dimensioned to support the weight of the shelves, as well as being quiet and, of course, economical.

One of the alternatives to the igus® lead screw and nut considered were recirculating ball screws, which, however, did not offer the same level of reliability at the same price level.

Therefore, cut to length and machined dryspin® lead screws were used to adapt them to the needs. This was to ensure the attachment to the frame and the coupling to the motors. The iglidur® J lead screw nuts with a flange were used in order to ideally meet all of the specified requirements. In addition, the system is rounded off by iglidur® clip bearings MCM-08-02 and MCM-08-04. All these references are key elements of the vertical translation system of our TAK-ONE modules.
