Autonomous measuring robot
Lead screw linear modules
in a demanding environment

Precise, simple, and efficient

The Civ Robotics autonomous measuring robot uses GPS to mark and measure coordinates on large construction sites such as solar parks and heavy construction sites. In order to achieve the necessary high degree of accuracy, the system uses a two-axis linear robot system based on igus® linear modules. The robot marks the exact position of the coordinate points in colour, dashed with a laser.  The customer receives a detailed report of the area with the marked coordinates and ground level measurements.

Profile:

  • What was needed: precise linear systems with lead screw drive and toothed belt axes with electric motor
  • Requirements: Temperature-resistant products are required for high loads in outdoor use. All components must also be resilient, rust-free, fail-safe, and resistant to water, dirt, and wear.
  • Industry: Robots
  • Success for the customer: drylin® SHT linear modules and ZLW toothed belt axes offer high load capacity and wear resistance. The robust structure allows autonomous driving through various environments, in heat or cold, through water, dirt, and even sandstorms. The systems are corrosion-free and maintenance-free.

Problem

The autonomous measuring robot needed to offer the end customer a high degree of accuracy and thus reliability. This requires products that can guarantee high precision with a maximum deviation of 6mm. But the greatest challenges are probably the external influences that affect the entire robot measuring system. Since most of Civ Robotics's customers are construction companies, the robot must be able to handle all weather conditions, including:
  • sandy subsoil in desert regions
  • strong winds and sandstorms
  • intense heat or cold (-20 to +50 °C)
  • wet, muddy ground
The autonomous measuring system must therefore be very insensitive to dirt and temperature and thus ensure that the measurements are not impaired.

Solution

igus® used lubrication-free linear modules to help the customer solve all problems associated with this project. Linear modules with lead screw drive and linear axes and with toothed belt drive were used. A trapezoidal thread with high positioning accuracy was used to drive the lead screw module in the measuring system. The ZLW-0630 toothed belt axes are controlled with a linear robot drive and a water-protected drylin® E electric motor.

The components allow completely lubrication-free adjustment with high precision and robustness, meeting requirements for durability and wear resistance. The system is also insensitive to water and dirt because it has no external lubricants. Other weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cannot harm the products.
